The idea for this book was born out of the desire to equip Christians with the means to help ground new believers in the faith and to see them established in a local church. Church growth studies have concluded that 80 percent of new converts are brought to the Lord through Christian friends or acquaintances. Shouldn't these same caring Christians also have the means and the confidence to disciple these new believers? This discipleship manual provides the material and direction for this to take place.

This book contains fifteen chapters, each addressing a key subject area foundational for a new Christian's growth. The chapters are taken from individual booklets published by Christian Equippers International. The goal of discipleship is accomplished in several ways. First, it puts the new believer in a relationship of care and informal accountability with a more mature Christian for a fifteen week period. The weeks may be shortened by skipping certain subjects. Secondly, it provides instruction in basic foundational areas vital to Christian growth. Third, the homework assignment at the end of each chapter provides the context for valuable discussion during the weekly meetings between the two. Fourth, the weekly meetings provide a time to discuss and pray for any problems or concerns the new believer may be having.

Defining the Discipleship Method

This book provides the format for a discipling relationship between a more mature believer and a newer Christian. In Matthew 28:17 Jesus commanded us to "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you." The successful spread of Christianity throughout this world requires that every believer assumes the responsibility of making disciples. Those of us who have been grounded in the faith must make a commitment to disciple those who are newly converted. Most of us can easily say "yes" to this calling in our own hearts but we often feel a lack of confidence in how to begin and what direction to take with those we would like to help.

The Foundation Stones discipleship manual makes this simple. Each week provides a clear comprehensive coverage of a subject vital to providing a spiritual foundation in the new believers life. The subject material and the related homework assignment becomes the ground for our weekly meetings.
